Abilities Week

Mayor Sylvester Turner has proclaimed the first week of October as Abilities Week in Houston. Local companies will partner with individuals with disabilities to help “serve the Houston community and demonstrate employability for individuals with disABILITIES.”

We are excited to be working together with the following companies to provide shadowing, volunteering, and other opportunities for individuals on the spectrum:

BP North America

Candidates of Spectrum Fusion will job shadow employees of BP’s North America gas and power marketing and trading group.

Houston Methodist Hospital

We are highlighting one of the fantastic outcomes of our last Reactor Room. Tristan Martinez is now volunteering as an intern in the Outpatient Rehabilitation Department with a wonderful physical therapist, Jill.

Thriver

Nicholas Giuffre is going to partner with Kayla from Thriver! Nicholas is earning his certification in personal training and he wants to work with individuals with special needs. Well, that is perfect because that is exactly what Thriver is all about! This looks like it is going to be a great fit.

Next Level Fitness

We have several adults on the spectrum who are interested in fitness. One of these young men wants to be a football coach and is knowledgeable about football strategy. He is going to have the opportunity to meet with Cederick Johnson who is a former football player and owner of a training facility, Next Level Fitness.

ROCO

Another win for our creatives! Our adults on the spectrum who are media specialists are going to meet with the staff of ROCO to learn about their jobs in the arts. They will have the opportunity to ask questions about the role of media in the promotion of the arts in Houston.

January Advisors

Our creative adults on the spectrum with degrees in media and communication will participate in a project update meeting with a variety of companies. They will have the opportunity to ask questions and debrief following the meeting.
